Judge #4 - May / June / July 2007

Justin Rushmore & Jem Panufnik - Finger Lickin' Records

WINNER ! - 'Monty' by Grinny Grandad.
"This track was the clear winner. It had what I look for in a track - vibe, energy and originality. Monty by Grinny Grandad has something that you just can’t resist and on a second listen makes you feel that the track is already a classic. I love the female vocals, sassy youthful and quirky, the confident beats, great arrangement and nice touches with the gun shot percussion. I also think that a mix down with Snorkel studios will take this project to an exciting level so all in all great name and very worthy winners."

2nd - 'The Skank (On Haunted Hill)' by The Fontanas.
"Great vocals take this melodic chugging train through an orchestral trek into the skank jungle. A host of instruments adds variety and flavour. The Skank (On a haunted hill) manages to maintain a positive vibe and keep a smile throughout its audio trip. Love to see this performed live with the band dressed as Zebras....(any chance?)"

3rd - 'Give It Away' by The 9000.
"Coming in  a close third with a high energy workout accompanied by high frequency top lines, squelches and rises reminiscent of early Bentley Rhythm Ace. Again this track had vibe and energy it conjures up images of men in gimp masks riding through the intergalactic forest of the solar system. Fun, quirky with a great un predicable arrangement. Love the close."

carbon logic proudly introduces the 4th guest judges.

Yes indeed, our wig wearing supremos who carried the scales of justice and good taste to carbon logic for our 4th competition were Justin Rushmore and Jem Panufnik. They are the badboy breaks duo "Soul of Man", and Head Honchos at Finger Lickin Records. Set up in 1998 Finger Lickin has firmly established itself as one of the leading independent dance labels in the global market, selling  nearly 1 million records along the way.

There remain few DJ's without at least one Finger Lickin' tune in their box. Support has come from all the big names in dance; Pete Tong, Fat Boy Slim, The Freestylers,  Adam Freeland and Sasha.

Finger Lickin' Records is renowned for its innovative style, pushing the envelope on sound design and production but never losing sight of the dance floor, with club bangers a plenty in their catalogue.  From the funky hip-hop smashes of Krafty Kuts and A Skillz, to the brooding bleeps, squelches and intricate textures that cloth the Plumps Dj's jackin breaks, the Finger Lickin output is diverse yet consistently popular with a worldwide fanbase.

Justin has always been a DJ, best known for his party-fuelled rocking sets. Having done his graft as a mobile jock back in the eighties, running his own parties and fixing his own disco lights,  he was drawn to the big neon glow of the metropolis. Whilst detouring around London’s orbital - the M25, searching for illegal warehouse raves such as Biology, Energy and Raindance, he discovered an insatiable passion for dance music. He was inspired by early Street Sounds electro, house music, soul, funk and dub. This sonic romance continued to blossom, and as well as developing an international reputation as a DJ, his skills as a  producer unfurled. Soul of Man have released over 50 singles and some 15 remixes in their ten year career.

Jem hails from a musical family, the son of a Polish Composer, and studied Graphic Design at Art College, where he learnt his chops in a band with Simon from Basement Jaxx and Dillon Barnes from Mutiny. He has always had a keen interest in funk and is a classically trained percussionist, stirring his rhythmic mojo into the Soul of Man brew. Jem has been building a tasty home studio over the years where he and Justin can often be found, conjuring up the next storming groove.

Finger Lickin is almost as well known for Jem's artwork as its music, a graffiti collage of creatures, caricatures and speaker stacks, with unique images lovingly penned for each release. This is a label with a great sense of humour!

Their current roster includes the Plump Dj's, A Skillz and Krafty Kuts, Slyde, Drummatic Twins, Brothers Bud, Lee Coombs, Stereo 8, and Soul of Man.

Finger Lickin continues to evolve and remain buoyant within the shifting sands of digital change, having developed a successful download shop and online vinyl store. They have also secured a succession of high profile sychronisation licences for their artists, with Coca Cola, Sky Sports, Sony Playstation, X Box and Renault to name a few.
